Hard to Leave
By Sarah Hughes
On the Arkansas side of the Mississippi ‘bout 45 miles in
The cotton grows right up to your chest in the fields that never end
Mosquitoes get big as your fist in the rice fields where they breed
Humidity is on the rise again feels like 200 degrees
The dust makes mud between your teeth when you ride with the windows down
The mud stays on your 4 x 4 when you’re living in a delta town
Not a whole lot to do at night ride the levee out to the bridge
But Memphis ain’t too far away, just east of Crowley’s Ridge
Chorus:
They’ve got the best fried chicken for miles around you can lose yourself and never be found
The doors are open just walk on in and as harmless as it may seem
It’s easy to get here and hard to leave
The people they’ve got a lot to say especially behind your back
Jenny she fell off the wagon again and Sam’s been sleeping with Jack
The country club is where it all goes down, you’ve got to be on your toes
Have one too many or say too much and everybody knows
But for the ones who don’t play golf or kiss ass, don’t like to tuck shirts in
There’re other fine establishments to practice late night sin
We’ve got the Valley on hwy. 70 and the Legion a few miles down
That’s where the locals with their fiery necks can usually be found
Chorus
Now on the map this delta jewel looks like any other town
But ordinary is far away, won’t find any like it around
I 40 cuts it right in half bringing all the country to see
That the hub of Eastern Arkansas is how a good small town should be
Chorus
